Mark, I really enjoyed the pod cast of you interview with Teresa Blaes. One thing that really struck me was her question about pastors not taking on tough issues due to the 501(c)(3) exemption rules. Your answer was right on. I believe that many pastors hide behind the IRS rules because they do not want to bring in controversial issues that might cause people to stop coming to their church, and, thus, reduce the cash flow. The IRS rules are very tough, in that they prohibit the endorsement of any particular candidate and prohibits “substantial lobbying activity,” which is not defined by the IRS. Note this is not ANY lobbying. It DOES NOT prohibit them from speaking out about issues of public policy in an educational or informational manner. I agree, it is time for churches and pastors to talk about these issues!
Thanks for listening!
