“For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want.” Galatians 5:17

If you are a Christian, an epic battle is raging inside you between your flesh and your spirit. For those of you who made New Year’s resolutions, I’m not telling you anything you’re not already painfully aware of. Whether your resolution was to stop smoking, stop drinking, loose weight or read your Bible more, I’m sure you have faced major resistance from your flesh. In fact, 92% of all New Year’s resolutions fail. Many of you reading this have already given up and we’re little more than a month into the new year.

What ever your struggle is, God wants to help you get through it and claim the victory. One of the most powerful ways to strip your flesh of its power over you is by fasting. When combined with time dedicated to prayer and Bible reading, you can also super charge your spirit to be stronger. Yes, it takes discipline, but you can do it! If you’ve given up on your resolution, I encourage you to pick a day this week that you can fast. Spend the time you would have spent eating by praying and reading the Bible. The conflict between your flesh and your spirit is going to be decided by which one you feed the most.

Surely these things happened to Judah according to the LORD’s command,in order to remove them from his presence because of the sins of Manasseh and all he had done, including the shedding of innocent blood. For he had filled Jerusalem with innocent blood, and the LORD was not willing to forgive.

2 Kings 24:3

Today’s scripture reminds us that one of the sins for which the southern kingdom of Israel was brought under judgment was the shedding of innocent blood. We know from several other areas of scripture that much of the innocent blood that was shed was the blood of babies who were sacrificed to Molech. Thousands of years later, another great society, the USA is mimicking the sins Israel. More that 57,000,000 children have been slaughtered in the United States since Roe vs Wade making the womb the most dangerous place for an American citizen. When divided by the 3,800,000 square miles in the US, we come up with 15 murdered innocent per square mile. So like the evil king, Manasseh, we have filled America with innocent blood.

So what are we to do? For one thing, if you are still attending a church that refuses to get involved politically, find one that is ready to get in the fight and move! This modern day holocaust has out-paced the Jewish Holocaust by nearly ten fold. Just as the Jewish Holocaust could not have occurred without the consent of the governed, neither could the murder of 57 million precious American babies.

Hitler said, “You take care of the church. You pastors should worry about getting people to heaven and leave this world to me.” Yes, saving souls should always be the primary mission of the Church and getting involved in politics should never hinder her ability to fulfill that mandate, but I believe the Church in America has the ability to walk and chew gum at the same time. We certainly see no shortage of church ministries that focus on softball teams, coffee shops, book stores, movie night and a wide array of social gatherings. And that is as it should be, because fellowship is also a vital ministry of the Church. My point is, if we have time for these things, let us not neglect the far more important task of political involvement.

Since politics have been neglected for so long and we do find ourselves in such a predicament of expecting God’s wrath, make sure you have your preparedness ducks in a row. Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’  “The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’ Matthew 25:37-40

I’m not a big TV guy because it is so time consuming. Besides that, most of the programming on TV ranges from moderately offensive to down right pornographic. One show my wife and I do like to watch when we need to just relax and veg out for an hour or two is Undercover Boss. If you haven’t seen it, the premise is that CEOs of large corporations put on a disguises and get into the trenches with their employees. With a couple of exceptions, the show is very family friendly and you often see some very good, hard working, salt-of-the-earth people.

Today’s verse tells us that essentially Jesus is doing the same thing as the CEOs on the show through those in need around us. If God has blessed you with a roof over your head, food in the fridge and clothes on your back, he expects you to help others when he puts them in your path. Not only can we help those in our immediate vicinity, but with the internet and online payment services, we can help folks all around the world.

I believe God also wants us to be good stewards with our giving. That means doing your due diligence to make sure the person or organization you’re helping  uses the resources wisely. So what about the guy on the street begging for a handout? Surely he is in need, but is giving him five or ten dollars the best way to help him? Probably not. More than likely, he is in his position because of drugs or alcohol. Being someone who God has delivered from addiction, I can tell you that God can use a lack of resources as a way to bringing a person closer to him. Several addiction recovery ministries exist which offer counseling, housing, food and programs to help addict get back on their feet and become productive members of society. More often than not, giving the guy on the street ten bucks allows him to keep wallowing in his sin so he doesn’t have to submit to the addiction recovery ministry.

The next time you see a homeless person that you’d like to help on the street, consider donating to an addiction ministry in your town. Teen Challenge and the Salvation Army are two that operate recovery programs all around America.

Other reputable Christian charities that help those in need are Samaritans Purse, Compassion, and Gospel for Asia.

Hope is a great organization which offers people a hand up rather than a hand out through combining micro-finance, economic education and the Gospel of Jesus.

My friend, Claudia Arango works at an orphanage called Good Sheperd’s Fold in Uganda, Africa which takes in children who have no parents. Many of which have lost their mothers and fathers to AIDS.

Just like in the show, the day is coming when the Boss will reveal himself to his workers and we will each get our report.
