Sunday Prepper Bible Study- Perseverance

“‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.'” Jeremiah 29:11

I know what you’re thinking. I mixed up the title and verse for today. What could Jeremiah 29:11 possibly have to do with perseverance?  It speaks of blessings and prosperity. When we think of perseverance, we think of hardship and lack. To get a full understanding of this verse, we have to look at the rest of the text. Read Jeremiah 29 for homework. This message is going out to the Jewish people who have just been sent into exile for turning their backs on God. Even though they are being sent to the wood shed, God is giving them hope. This hope, as declared in chapter 29 is to come after they have served their time in Babylon. And how long might that be? 70 years! So this verse was a message of hope to people who would be living under oppression for the next seven decades? Wow! That gives a whole new perspective to everyone’s favorite refrigerator-magnet verse.

If you’ve felt God speak this verse to you, just keep persevering until He delivers.

In the grand scheme of things, we know God will deliver in the next life if not in this one. For most of us, we have less than 70 years remaining in our exile here in this present Babylon. After that, rest assured that God has plans to give you hope and a future that you could never imagine!

Sunday Prepper Bible Study- Contradiction or Correction?

“He said to them, ‘But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one.'” Luke 22:36

“‘Put your sword back in its place,’ Jesus said to him, ‘for all who draw the sword will die by the sword.'” Matthew 26:52

Does anyone else ever wonder if Jesus might be a little contradictory at times? In fact, there are several places in the Bible that seem to contradict at times. Upon closer inspection though, we find that the occurrences are usually bringing us closer to a path of wisdom. So yes, Jesus instructed his disciples to purchase a weapon. In fact, that weapon was the weapon commonly carried by military soldiers in His day. We might say it would be the equivalent of the modern battle rifle.

Peter took that directive and ran with it. Despite the fact that Jesus had already informed him of how he was to die, Peter wanted to use his sword to assert his will over God’s will. At that point, Jesus had to reel him back in and tell him to put his sword back in its place.

The message hidden between these two verses is one of balance. Jesus instructs his disciples to be armed, but he also expects them to follow his lead and keep a cool head. As patriots, it’s important to seek God’s will in all we do. I always pray that God will keep me on the straight and narrow path and not allow me to veer too far to the left nor to the right.
