Jesus is the Reason for the Season
It’s Christmas! Gifts, trees, lights, family, cartoon specials and my personal favorite, cookies!
Let’s not forget why we celebrate. Christmas is the day that we have chosen to celebrate the birth of our Lord. That is a big deal. The Creator of the universe decided to come to earth and live as a man. When he did, he did not choose to come as the great and mighty king that He is. Instead, He chose to come as a helpless child. Even then, he did not choose to be born in a comfortable place. He chose to be born in a stable where he slept in a feeding trough. This humble beginning would set the tone for the rest of his life as He would go on to be ridiculed by the religious leadership, betrayed by one of his closet friends and finally murdered by government. And He did it all for you.
Yes, I know December 25th is likely not the day Christ was born. December 25th was the last day of the Roman holiday of Saturnalia. The Romans actually made a human sacrifice on the 25th to destroy the forces of darkness. Some say it was also the birth day of the Roman god of soldiers, Sol Invictus which is translated the unconquered sun. The day was co opted in the 4th century by Rome, which was largely Christian at the time, as a Christian holiday.
Would God approve of us celebrating a pagan holiday? Paul writes in Romans 14:5-6:
“One man considers one day more sacred than another; another man considers every day alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind. He who regards one day as special, does so to the Lord. He who eats meat, eats to the Lord, for he gives thanks to God; and he who abstains, does so to the Lord and gives thanks to God.”
And in 1 Corinthians 10:31 he says:
“So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”
Personally, I think it is wonderful that on December 25th we celebrate the Unconquered Son rather than the unconquered sun. It is also worth mentioning that we no longer make a human sacrifice on the day as the forces of darkness have already been defeated by the supreme sacrifice made by my King, Jesus Christ. It is one time of the year that even the pagans are listening to “Away in the manger” while they do their “holiday” shopping.
What about the tree? Isn’t that an idol worshiped by the ancient druids? My Christmas tree isn’t. It has a star on the top which reminds me of the star that led the wise men to Jesus. It also has a small manger on it to remind me of the event. My tree also has candy canes in the shape of a shepherds crook that reminds me Jesus is the good Shepherd. It isn’t the object or the origin; just like with Jesus, it is what you do with it personally.
