North Korean Defector Talks Cyber Warfare
“I thought Rodman would have gotten me better seats.”
A former member of North Korea’s Cyber Warfare Division said that North Korea has been preparing for a cyber attack against the U.S. for years. The defector, Jang Se-yul, escaped the communist regime by crossing the border into South Korea. He said the Cyber Warfare Division has over 3,000 members. He told the Observer that North Korea would try to steal information from computers in the United Sates and try to disrupt computer networks. Jang also said they would try to infect computers with viruses to demonstrate North Korean cyber warfare capabilities.
North Korea is suspected of causing the disruptions with three major television networks and two major banks in South Korea last month. Those outages lasted for only about 7 hours before services were restored, but no one knows for sure the limits of North Korea’s ability to cause chaos through cyber warfare.
Department of Homeland Security Secretary, Janet Napolitano told reporters in January that America could face a cyber 9/11 “imminently”. She explained that infrastructure such as water systems, the electrical grid and gas supplies are extremely vulnerable. She told an audience at the Wilson center “We shouldn’t wait until there is a 9/11 in the cyber world. There are things we can and should be doing right now that, if not prevent, would mitigate the extent of damage,”. If this is the language we are getting from the government that tends to sugar coat everything, it is time to get prepared.
At a very minimum, you should have several weeks worth of storable food. If our electrical grid suffers an attack, the grocery stores will be closed. You should have a minimum of 3 days worth of water, 3 gallons for each member of the family and means of filtering and purifying water yourself. You should keep at least $1,000 in cash that you can access in a hurry. Keep it in a safe or well hidden. If the banks get hit, any store that is open may not be able to process your credit card. Also have a means of defending yourself and your family. Inventories are still tight, but Lucky Gunner has restocked some ammo. People will start to get desperate after three days of no stores or electricity. For a more complete guide to preparedness, read our 7 Step Survival Plan.
Happy Prepping!
