Home Security- After the Collapse and Now

Home Security- After the Collapse and Now

Home security doesn’t end with purchasing a firearm. Getting a good weapon to defend your life, family and property is just the beginning of  making your home secure. There are a few common sense ways to make your home a harder target now and after the collapse. Surprisingly, many of the suggestions in today’s post are not very expensive.

Hardening Your Home Now.

Criminals hate light. One of the easiest things you can do is to leave a porch light on at night. You can also add a bright light in your backyard with a simple light sensor timer and an outdoor flood light. While it is not necessarily “green” to leave extra lights on, it is a lot cheaper than getting broken into.

Make sure everything is locked up. Even when you are home, make sure the doors are locked. Leaving doors unlocked is just asking for trouble. For even more security, consider installing an alarm system. You can find an abundance of great systems on safemart.com, as well as other resources too.

When you go out of town, ask the post office to hold your mail. It usually requires only a short form to be filled out and left for your mail carrier. This easy step will avoid having a a stuffed mail box that broadcasts to the world that no one is home.

A cheap $5 timer can be programed to make your lights and TV come on after dark when you are away or working the late shift. A news channel will sound like people inside talking to anyone who is thinking of breaking in.

Security After the Collapse.

A dog will make a great team member after the collapse. You will have other chores besides standing guard 24/7. Even a small dog is very alert and will let you know if someone comes around who doesn’t belong.

Trip wire alarms are easily manufactured from a mouse trap, nail, string and most any type of firearm primer or nail gun load or toy gun caps. The video by Kipkay below shows how to make an alarm with toy gun caps. You could use the same concept with black powder firearm primers for a louder alarm. These alarms can be used to set a perimeter around your home to alert you when intruders cross preset boundaries. Never use live  ammunition rounds as these alarms could be accidentally set off by you, your pet, neighbor or child, and result in serious injury.

Think About What is On the Other Side.

If your weapon of choice to defend against intruders is a high powered firearm, make sure you think about the potential collateral damage if the bullet travels beyond the intruder. If you have kids in the next room, think about how you can take a shot without putting them in danger. Bird shot in a 12 gauge shotgun will likely kill your assailant at close range, but will  have less penetration into the next room than a large caliber hand gun or high powered rifle.

Finally, be aware. Your brain is your number one survival tool. Use it to apply these simple tips to make your home a less desirable target now and after the collapse. I find that survival fiction helps to get my creative prepper juices flowing. Check out my new prepper fiction novel, American Exit Strategy, Book One of The Economic Collapse Chronicles . Liberty minded individuals and those who believe in the Constitution will find this near future dystopian novel to be right up their alley. Those who are looking to be more informed about the potential threats to America’s financial stability will learn what to watch for and how to prepare themselves for an economic collapse.

Happy Prepping!

Tapper Tease- The Fed Backs Down on Tapper Talk

on September 23, 2013 at 3:58 am
Posted In: Economy, Potential Threats

ben

The Fed announced that they would not change their current asset purchasing program often referred to as Quantitative Easing or QE. The Fed announced they would continue purchasing $85 billion a month in US Treasuries and Mortgage Backed Securities or MBSs. As markets had priced in a “tapper lite”,this sent bond yields plummeting and gold prices soaring. The yield on 10 year US Treasuries dipped 15 basis points to 2.71% on the day of the announcement. Gold went up $55 an ounce and silver shot up up $1.47, nearly 7% in a matter of hours after the Fed announced they would not tamper with the punch bowl via a taper.

At the end of the day, the Fed’s recent decision means very little in the long run. US debt is over $17 trillion dollars. As interest rates begin to normalize, the debt service will continue to consume a larger and larger portion of our overall federal revenue. We have seen rates on 10 year US Treasuries jump from 1.6% to nearly 3% in recent weeks. That jump alone represents a $238 billion dollar increase in annual interest payments to be paid from our overspent budget. As the average rate approaches the 10 year rate, and it usually does, the total debt service will be $510,000,000,000.00 or 20% of our entire revenue collected by the IRS. If the rate returns to the highs of the 1980’s, right around 15.8%,  the interest payments on our current federal debt will outstrip all federal revenue. Not good.

At least the economic policy drama is over, right? Wrong! The next round of the debt ceiling debates begin next month. We all remember what fun those have been over the past few years. The trend for debt ceiling debates have been further erosion of confidence in the US dollar, higher gold and silver prices and political gridlock.

The entire system is set to pop. Like a ticking time bomb, a new crisis is just waiting to blow up in our face. As with all the crises and bubbles before, it is impossible to time, because it all depends on the confidence of investors and market participants. When the confidence in the US dollar and our government’s ability to repay its debt erodes, and it will erode, everyone will head for the exit at once.

In my new book, American Exit Strategy, Book One of the Economic Collapse Chronicles, I use survival fiction to take an in-depth look at the real life politics and economics behind the issues that are likely to trigger a currency collapse or financial meltdown in the near future. Liberty minded individuals and those who believe in the Constitution will find this near future dystopian novel to be right up their alley. Those who are looking to be more informed about the potential threats to America’s financial stability will learn what to watch for and how to prepare themselves for an economic collapse.

Happy Prepping!

Sunday Prepper Bible Study-Do You Have to Believe in God to Go to Heaven?

pope

Sunday Prepper Bible Study-Do You Have to Believe in God to Go to Heaven?

Pope Francis was asked this question recently, and his answer has made many assume that it is not necessary. I found the language that he used to be rather ambiguous.

The Pope stated in a letter “You ask me if the God of the Christians forgives those who don’t believe and who don’t seek the faith. Given — and this is the fundamental thing — that God’s mercy has no limits, if He is approached with a sincere and repentant heart, the question for those who do not believe in God is to abide by their own conscience.”

I suppose, after pondering the answer, I would assume the same thing. While still a bit enigmatic, it sounds as if the Pope is preaching a gospel of “You’ll be OK as long as you abide by your own conscience.” Can we interpret that as meaning “just do whatever seems right in your own eyes.”?

I guess that works out pretty good if your moral compass is properly aligned, but it seems more and more people’s moral compasses are just a tad bit off magnetic north. What about the 9/11 hijackers who sacrificed their lives doing what they believed in? Were they not abiding by their own conscience? Is sincerity enough even if we are sincerely wrong?

What does the Bible say?

Perhaps we should dig into the Pope’s official handbook, The Bible. I am sure we will find the verses  he used to come up with such a magnificent revelation.

OK, how’s this one? “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Romans 3:23. Wow, that doesn’t sound anything like “You’ll be OK as long as you abide by your own conscience.” It actually sounds quite contradictory. It says everyone sinned, and everyone fell short. Isn’t falling short the exact opposite of being OK?

Well, let’s find a better verse to suite our new doctrine. Maybe Jesus himself can help us out a bit here. John 3:18 says “ Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.” That doesn’t help a bit. According to that verse, not only are we required to believe in God to get to heaven, we also have to believe in His Son. To get rid of any misunderstanding in the matter, Christ went on to specifically point out that unbelief guaranteed condemnation.
Could it be possible that since Christ had not yet ascended into Heaven, he wasn’t working with all the information? Lets see what he had to say after His ascension. Revelation 21:8 says “But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.” I just can’t figure this out. Jesus specifically pointed out that unbelievers would have their place in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. He made no concession for the ones who live according to their conscience.
Well, unless you can come up with some better verses than I found, based on the Pope’s own text book, you must believe in God and His one and only Son to get to Heaven. The purpose of this post is not to offend my Catholic brothers and sisters, but rather to get everyone to examine what leaders say in the light of God’s Word. If it is not the truth, much harm can come from believing it.

If you are new to prepping or would like to learn more about how to prepare for tomorrow, please read our 7 Step Preparedness Plan. The most important prep of all is knowing GOD. Jesus said “what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world yet loses his own soul?” Prepper translation: “What good will it do you to survive the coming economic collapse, nuclear war or even a zombie apocalypse if you don’t know you will go to heaven when you die.” A recent study found that 10 out of 10 people die! On that day we will meet our Maker. It only makes sense to be prepared for that day. Click here to learn more about knowing GOD.

Have a blessed week and happy prepping!

Ammunition Depot’s Scott Blick on Ammo as an Alternative Currency

Scott Blick from Ammunition Depot stops by today to talk about the ammunition market. Ammunition Depot hold the largest ammunition inventory in the South. Availability is starting to normalize, but demand stays high according to Scott.  He tells us that supply remains tight and just the slightest hint of a run on ammunition could easily trigger another inventory squeeze on the overall ammo market.

Scott and I also talk about the continued attack on our constitutional rights, especially the Second Amendment. The NRA has been key in lobbying to maintain our 2nd Amendment rights. It is a shame that we must send lobbyists to protect our constitutionally guaranteed rights, but that is the way the game is played. I believe it is very important for everyone who is able to support the NRA and other advocacy groups that fight for freedom.

We talk about the consequences of the national debt and the possible effects of interest rates when they begin to normalize. If 10 year treasury rates were to return to their highs reached during the 1980s, the debt service would outstrip the entire Federal revenue. Last  month, we saw the labor participation rate drop to its lowest level since 1978. The continued downward spiral of the American economy may just be the economic collapse happening in slow motion.

Head on over to Ammunition Depot to check out what specials they have going on right now. There company moto is “when the SHTF, lead will be worth more than gold.”

New Prepper Fiction Book! American Exit Strategy, Book One of the Economic Collapse Chronicles

After a long editing process by my diligent wife, my first book is finally available on Amazon.com in paperback and on Kindle. If you are a fan of dystopian and survival fiction, you will love American Exit Strategy. I have tried to use the book as a platform to educate as well as entertain. There are tons of great tips on prepping and some very easy to understand explanations of the financial challenges our country is facing.

American Exit Strategy synopsis:

America is on the cusp of financial annihilation. Matt and Karen Bair face the challenges of Main Street during a full scale financial meltdown. Government borrowing and monetary creation have reached their limits. When funds are no longer available for government programs, wide spread civil unrest erupts across the country. Matt and Karen are forced to move to a more remote location and their level of preparedness is revealed as being much less adequate than they believed prior to the crisis.

Meanwhile,  Paul Randall, a third party presidential candidate arises to push back against the welfare and warfare spending that have bankrupted our country. While he has gained wide spread acceptance, the fight has just begun. Paul Randall proposes a plan to mitigate the coming hyper-inflationary collapse which is a mathematical certainty. His plan is known as The American Exit Strategy.

Family Friendly

You won’t feel embarrassed by the language as I keep it G rated. There are a few scenes of intense action in the book and a couple of good old fashion shoot outs, but I tried to write something the whole family could enjoy.

Check it out today and please let me know what you think!

Top Ten Foods to Store for the Apocalypse

Top Ten Foods to Store for the Apocalypse

If you are new to prepping, you may be wondering what to do for long term storable food. There are a few prepper favorites that can kick start your long term food supply. Most folks who are just starting to prepare are also working on a limited budget. I made sure we started with the low budget picks.

#1 Rice

White rice will store for 20 years if you keep it cool and dry. If you go a step further and put it into Mylar bags with oxygen absorbers, it will last even longer. Make sure it is white rice. Brown rice still contains the bran which makes it more healthy, but it also contains fats which will rot. The shelf life of brown rice is only about 6 months to a year unless it is refrigerated. As far as cost, it is hard to get more bang for the buck than rice. You can purchase a 20 lb bag for under $10. That is a lot of calories for the money.

#2 Beans

Like rice, dried beans have a very long shelf life. Depending on the variety, most beans will keep for 10 years. Like the rices, Mylar liners and oxygen absorbers will  make them last even longer. Beans are an excellent source of protein and fiber. Beans can be bought for under $1 a pound if you buy large bags.

#3 Canned Meat

Canned meat is getting a bit pricier than beans and rice, but a few cans of it will make a nice supplement. You can purchase canned ham, chicken and tuna to give you a quick source of protein. The shelf life is shorter than beans and rice. As long as the cans aren’t dented or rusty, the contents will last indefinitely although the flavor will deteriorate after the expiration date.

#4 Canned Soup

A can of tomato soup or cream of celery will flavor up your beans and rice to give you a bit of a different flavor. As with the canned meat, it will last indefinably but lose flavor after the expiration.

#5 Canned Pasta

In a none emergency situation, canned pasta may be the worst thing you could eat. It is loaded with fat and calories. In a survival situation, especially one that requires strenuous activity, fat and calories are your best friend. Canned pasta is a great food to keep in your bug out bag.

#6 Flour

Flour is the ingredient for many great foods: biscuits, pancakes, bread and cookies. Of course you will need to learn to cook for yourself. That is an easy skill to obtain while we still have the internet.

#7 Sugar

You won’t be able to use your flour to make any cake or cookie without the sugar.

#8 Jelly

Jelly if canned and will last indefinitely. It will also go great on a homemade biscuit.

#9 Peanut Butter

Peanut butter store well without refrigeration and is an excellent source of protein and good fats.

#10 Any dry storage food you can buy with coupons

Coupons are the best way to maximize your budget when trying to stock up for the coming storm. Make sure to hit our coupon corner to learn how to get lots of items to fill your pantry for free or almost free.

Sunday Prepper Bible Study- Perseverance

Luke 8:14 The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life’s worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature. 15 But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop.

As Christians, it is easy to get bogged down with the hustle and bustle of day to day life. It seems that all the technology we have created to save us time has left us busier than ever before. All of this running around leaves us with little time left over to spend on spiritual pursuits like reading the Bible or prayer.

In today’s Bible verse, we see that the seed sown among the thorns is choked out. It never develops to be what it was intended to be. The first issue those folks had were worries. It is easy to get caught up in worrying about what may happen, especially with all of the proverbial black swans we have encircle over our head right now. I still believe it is prudent to take some time to prepare for the events that may have a catastrophic impact on our lives. But once you have done your part to prepare, leave the rest up to God. Do your best then let God do the rest.

The next  issue that kept the seed from growing to maturity was riches. Of course we all need to work hard to provide for ourselves, after all the Bible also says in 2 Thessalonians 3:10 “if a man will not work, he shall not eat.” But be content with what God blesses you with and make sure you are taking a day of rest. Even if your job requires you to work on Sunday, set aside a day off that you can rest and spend some time with God.

Finally, the last issue interfering with the seeds growth was pleasures. Maybe you are diligent about taking your day of rest, but for you, that day is spent on the golf course or out on the boat rather than in church. It is great to get out and relax, just make sure you are not doing it at the expense of your spiritual development.

The seed that was able to mature and produce a good crop is said to have done so through perseverance. To grow spiritually, we must persevere by making a priority out of spending time with God. rather than giving God the leftovers, why not start each day with a few verses in  the Bible and a few minutes of prayer. It will start your day of on the right track. While your commuting, gardening or on the treadmill, listen to a sermon by your favorite pastor on mp3. Don’t have a favorite pastor? Then i’ll share mine with you. All of Pastor Chuck Smith’s sermons are available for a free download at TWFT.com.
