Cash Cache- Accessing Cash When It Hits the Fan

No, Not that Cash.

100s

Yeah, THAT’s the one!

Are you planning to be the first one to the ATM when it hits the fan? Good luck with that plan. You better plan ahead, or you will be as cashless as Vivian Liberto at a June Carter concert.

Banks Don’t Keep Much Cash On Hand

I went to the bank today to make a modest withdraw. I ask the teller for six $100 bills. He could only give me four. The rest, he had to give me in $50 bills. The bank did not have six $100 bills. I probably could have gotten someone to go in the back to get another stack out of the safe if it had been all that important, but the reality is banks are not prepared for any kind of a currency run.

Today’s market is becoming increasingly cashless.  More and more transactions are being handled by credit cards and other electronic means. This requires banks to  use less and less cash. The less cash they need, the less they have on hand. No big deal as long as your credit card keeps working. And that system is fail safe, right? Wrong! We are increasingly seeing cyber attacks on individual banking networks that knock out all banking services for hours; that includes credit cards. We haven’t seen widespread outages yet, but the day is coming.

I wrote an article a few months back about a friend who had been the victim of identity theft and a banking mistake all in the same year. Both of these incidents left her without cash. In the first incident, her debit card was cloned and her account drained. After months of investigations, it was determined that it was not her fault and her funds were returned by the bank. In the second incident, her mortgage company drafted three months of payments in one week. This also drained her account. Both of these incidents left her without access to cash.

I am sure there are  plenty of folks who have lost it all in home invasions because they had all of their cash at home. I just don’t know any of them personally. It is not an “either or” situation. Diversification is the key. Keep a few bucks around the house in a safe or a well hidden place. There are lots of things besides “the end of the world as we know it” that can keep you from being able to get to your money. Here in South Florida, we had widespread power outages after Hurricane Wilma. I am sure folks in the North East experienced the same thing last year after Sandy. When the power goes out, guess what. That’s right! The ATM’s are out, Credit card machines don’t work and Banks are closed. Several Mom and Pop stores were open after Hurricane Wilma, but they were only taking cash. You either had it before you needed it or you didn’t get it at all.

Now For The Clincher!

Back in March, the country of Cyprus witnessed something many other countries have witnessed before, a bank holiday. I know, it sounds like something we should celebrate with juice and cookies, but it’s not. A bank holiday is where the banks are closed by the government. Cypriots went weeks without being able to withdraw money. When the banks reopened, they were restricted to 500 Euros a week.

I have a friend who is from Russia. Ana grew up during the crisis in the late 90’s. She watched her family go from upper middle class to completely poverty stricken. Her family’s hard earned savings sat in the bank where it could not be accessed because of capitol controls. Because their money could not be accessed, it was destroyed by runaway inflation. After 7 years, their savings lost more than 90% of its value. If it had been outside of the banking system, it could have been used for much needed items or they could have put it into gold and silver to preserve its wealth.

People think that kind of thing will never happen in America, and I pray that they are right. It only makes sense to keep some portion of your savings outside of the banking system. None of the countries who have been through the chaos like Russia and Argentina thought it would happen to them. Both of those countries also saw hyperinflation devastate their money as well. Gold and silver can protect against hyperinflation and complete currency collapse, but you have to convert it before the crisis. Once the crisis comes, the prices will skyrocket and availabilities quickly dry up like a puddle in the desert. I use JM Bullion for purchasing gold and silver. Use coupon code PR5 to get $5 off your order of $300 or more. They are a sponsor of PrepperRecon.com, but I was using them prior to their sponsorship of the site because they have the lowest over spot price of any dealer I know of.

How much you keep outside of the banking system is up to you, but I recommend keeping at least one months expenses in cash in a safe or well hidden location in your home. To learn more about gold and silver, read my Bullion post.

Happy Prepping!

China’s $23TN Credit Bubble Could Trigger Global Collapse

china

The Great Fall of China

First the good news.

For years now, commentators have been singing the praises of the communist country’s ability to rise to power on the world economic stage. Last year, a slowing global economy meant China’s GDP growth rate was only 7.8%. Compared to the US at 2.2%, it still looks pretty good. 2012 was the first year in over five years that China’s GDP growth fell below 9.2%. Could China’s growth be to good to be true?

The growth must be legit. After all, they have the most coveted resource of any industry; cheap labor. The average annual income for a Chinese family is about 13,000 RMB, or around $2,100 USD.  That is less than some US families receive in government benefits in one month. Despite the ultra low wages, China’s savings rate is among the worlds highest at 50%. These facts are based on averages, and do not tell the entire story. The income disparity in China is colossal, but that is beyond the scope of this post.
The fact remains, that the Chinese people know how to sacrifice today for a better tomorrow.

Another sign of strength is China’s purchases of gold. China bought 800 tonnes of gold in 2012 and are on track to purchase more than 800 tonnes in 2013.This is in addition to the gold that is being mined in China and retained in the country. Unlike America, where our Central banks says “gold is not money”, China encourages its citizens to purchase gold and silver as stores of value.

Now the bad news.

So what is not to love? Charlene Chu of Fitch Ratings says there is a mountain of systemic problems under the surface. Chu is considered a rockstar in the credit analyst community, and she is the “go to” expert on all things Chinese financials for the Federal Reserve and huge Wall Street firms like Goldman Sachs.

Chu reports that a vast sea of unreported debt is looming in China. Estimates suggest that private sector debt is  around 214% of GDP. After a Q and A session with Chu, Goldman Sachs sent out a warning to client about their concerns over China’s credit risk.

While Chu says it is impossible to know where all of the money is being borrowed from and being lent to, we can certainly make an educated guess. 60 Minutes Australia did an expose’ on China’s Ghost cities. They have built over 15 entire cities that are completely empty. When they say cities, they are not talking about Hazard,  Kentucky; they are talking about cities the size of Manhattan. Cities with all of the infrastructure in place, malls, office buildings, condominiums, police stations and fire departments.

Watch this short excerpt from the 60 Minutes Australia report. It is about 12 minutes long.

So if we had a housing bubble in America that sent shock waves around the world, what happens when a city bubble pops? Could this be the black swan event that triggers a global meltdown? Prior to the 2008 housing bubble crisis, we had no shortage of people like Charlene Chu warning of the imminent crisis. Peter Schiff, Nouriel Roubini and even Ron Paul warned of impending financial chaos in the housing market. Of course they all said 2008 was just the opening act, they expect much darker days ahead.

The failure of Lehman Brothers was the first domino to fall in the 2008 credit bubble crisis. Will China’s massive $23 trillion dollar credit bubble be the first domino to trigger the global economic collapse?

How to Write a Bible Study After the Collapse

How to Write a Bible Study After the Collapse

The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul. The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple.  The precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes.  The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever. The ordinances of the LORD are sure and altogether righteous.  They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb.  By them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward.

Psalms 19:7-11

The rule of 3s says you can last about 3 minutes without air, 3 hours in adverse conditions without shelter, 3 days without water, 3 weeks without food and 3 months without hope. The Bible is a tremendous source of hope for those who know how to navigate it.

After the stuff hits the fan, you may find yourself in a situation that doesn’t allow you to get to church regularly or access the internet for online Bible teachings. It could be a gasoline shortage that makes it impossible to travel or a lack of services like electricity that shuts down your church and your computer. Of course, there is the possibility of civil unrest that causes you to shelter in place for an extended period of time.

In tough times, people look for leadership, especially spiritual leadership. Your family or your community may look to you for direction and hope. Could you put together a Bible study to give your family or retreat group the hope they need to survive? The answer is “Yes you can!”

Coming up with a topic for a Bible study will probably be the easiest part after a TEOTWAWKI event. More than likely most people are going to be a bit scared and apprehensive no matter how well you have prepared.

The tough part is going to be getting that message of peace unless you are connected. That is the part you have to start working on now. Being connected comes through spending time in prayer, reading the Bible, and worshiping God.  Jesus taught us to stay connected to him, because we can do nothing on our own. Think of your spiritual preparedness as a computer. If you have dial up  you have a limited amount of connectivity and you can receive a limited amount of information. If you have DSL, it might be a bit better. Now if you have a premium broadband connection, you should really be able to get a great message through the internet. If you are not plugged in though, forget it. Your computer only has the information stored inside and could never hope to get information from an outside source.

If you hope to be able to put together a bible study, you are also going to have to be familiar with the text. After all, even if you feel led to teach on a particular topic, it won’t do you any good if you don’t know where that story is in the Bible. A lot of people read there Bible regularly, but they just kind of hop around from scripture to scripture. You will never get to know the whole book like that. The best way to get to know the whole Bible is to commit to reading a few chapters everyday, and to commit to reading it cover to cover. I started doing that about 8 years ago and now read through the Bible approximately once a year. There are several great Bible reading plans online that will help you develop the discipline for reading the Bible all the way through.

A great place to start when things seem to be falling apart is Psalms. The first section of Psalms was written by David who had a lot of experience with trouble. The Psalms are filled with prayers of hope and faith in God to deliver us through the difficult patches in life. I turn to them when I have my own personal Stuff Hit The Fan moments.

A big shout out to Todd Sepulveda over at Prepper Website for giving me the idea for this week’s Bible study!!!

If you are new to prepping or would like to learn more about how to prepare for tomorrow, please read our 7 Step Preparedness Plan. The most important prep of all is knowing GOD. Jesus said “what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world yet loses his own soul?” Prepper translation: “What good will it do you to survive the coming economic collapse, nuclear war or even a zombie apocalypse if you don’t know you will go to heaven when you die.” A recent study found that 10 out of 10 people die! On that day we will meet our Maker. It only makes sense to be prepared for that day. Click here to learn more about knowing GOD.

Have a blessed week and happy prepping!

End NSA Prism/ How Did Your Representative Vote?

End NSA Prism/How Did Your Representative Vote?

Recently, Representative Justin Amash (R) Michigan sponsored House Amendment 413 to H. R. 2397 to end authority for the blanket collection of records under the Patriot Act. It would also bar the NSA and other agencies from using Section 215 of the Patriot Act to collect records, including telephone call records.

So how did your Representative vote? Are they supporters of the Constitution or would they prefer an absolute police state? The fact that a representative voted “Yes” on this amendment does not automatically qualify them as a patriot, but anyone who voted “No” is definitely an enemy of freedom and hold no regard for the 4th Amendment of the Constitution.

The 4th Amendment reads “The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.”

Benjamin Franklin famously said:

“Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.”

Find your Representative and send them a note of appreciation or rebuke today!

The Wayward Journey- Book Review

If you like prepper fiction, you will absolutely love “The Wayward Journey”. Author Nathan Jefferson Hale has written a post apocalyptic thriller that won’t let you put the book down. Nathan Hale Jefferson has also proven that an author doesn’t have to use a lot of vulgar and filthy language to write a great dystopian novel. I saw very little profanity, no F-bombs and he never used God’s holy name as a swear word. The story follows the protagonist, John,  as he fights to get home to his family after a major earthquake in the New Madrid Seismic Zone. The earthquake also triggers an economic collapse that was just waiting for a catalyst.

Resource scarcity exacerbates the problems caused by the economy and the earthquake. Oil and food prices were already at levels making normal life difficult for those on the lower rungs of the ladder. The book portrays a very realistic look at how disasters like this can bring out the best and the worst of society.

We see how the mind of a predator thrives in  an environment where there are no checks, and we see how easily people are taken in by those that mean them harm when they don’t know where to turn for security and stability.

You can purchase the book through Amazon by clicking the link below. Nathan Hale Jefferson was on the Prepper Recon Podcast about two months ago. We had a great interview. He told us about his involvement with the Indiana State level Department of Homeland Security drill for a large scale earthquake in the New Madrid Seismic Zone. Sunday Prepper Bible Study – Luke 22:36

Prepper slide 3

Sunday Prepper Bible Study – Luke 22:36

“He said to them, “But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one.” Luke 22:36

Christian preppers are often looked down upon as lacking in faith or being accused of worrying by other Christians. In fact, there are numerous places in the Bible that encourage us to prepare. In today’s verse, Jesus instructed his followers to to do three things that I would consider “prepping”.

“If you have a purse, take it”

Ladies, if you have a purse, you probably keep a lot of stuff in it. Guys, no need to go buy a new Louis Vuitton handbag. The Greek word was “balantion”, which was a money bag. The Romans were well on their way to devaluing the currency by reducing the content of precious metal in their coins at the time, but it still had not devalued into a purely fiat paper currency like the U.S. Dollar. The  modern application to this might be keeping some cash outside of the banking system. If we ever have a bank holiday like Cyprus had not long ago, you will be glad you did. Another practical application might be to actually keep some portion of that cash in precious metals. All fiat currencies do eventually return to their intrinsic value, which is nothing.

“And also a bag;”

The bug out bag is a prepper staple. It should contain the item you need to stay alive for 72 hours. This is a great first priority in preparedness. It should have a means of purifying water, a medical kit, 3 days of food and some spare clothing. Click this link for a complete guide to building a Bug Out Bag.

“if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one.“

This part of the verse needs no explanation. The second amendment is about your duty as an American citizen to defend the rights of your fellow Americans to worship God. Rest assured, soon after any government relieves its citizens of the ability to fight, they will relieve them of their right to worship. If the government takes our guns, there will be nothing to stop them from taking any other right, including the right to exist.

FTM Daily’s Jerry Robinson on The Prepper Recon Podcast

Today’s Guest is Jerry Robinson from Follow The Money. Jerry is an economist and the author of “Bankruptcy of Our Nation”. Jerry produces a weekly radio show that covers economic and political trends. Jerry warns his listeners of the illusion of our current fiat monetary system and the reckless actions of the Federal Reserve and Congress. Jerry offers solutions to help his listeners navigate the coming tough economic times. Just over a year ago, I was listening to Jerry’s show and he recommended starting a web based business or blog. Seemed like a good idea at the time, so I started PrepperRecon.com

Today’s Podcast is the companion podcast to “Budget” Step 2 of our 7 Step Survival Plan. The plan is a blue print to help you get prepared without breaking the bank. It will also help you prioritize your preparedness. New preppers are often overwhelmed when they start prepping.  The 7 Step Survival Plan helps to keep it in small achievable steps that lead to successively higher levels of preparedness.

On today’s show, Jerry Robinson and I discuss the historical record of fiat currencies versus gold and silver. He  gives us a brief description of the Petro Dollar System which has propped up the U.S. dollar since 1973. Jerry explains the catastrophe that will follow the end of the Petro Dollar System. If you are considering buying gold or silver to hedge against a currency collapse, check out the prices at JM Bullion. They have they lowest over spot price of any online dealer I know. Make sure to use coupon code PR5 to get $5 off any order over $300.

We also discuss the importance of putting together and maintaining a budget for your household. Jerry offers great advice as to what portion of your weekly income should be saved and how many months of income should be allocated to an emergency fund. He also gives a great recommendation for how to divide your emergency fund into U.S. Dollars, gold, silver and foreign currency.

Listen to today’s show to hear what Jerry says about keeping a bug out bag and purchasing a retreat location or bug out land. You can download all of Jerry’s weekly broadcasts at FTMDaily.com.

You can purchase your copy of Jerry’s book, “Bankruptcy of Our Nation” through Amazon by clicking the book image link below.

Happy Prepping!
