Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord:  looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled;  lest there be any fornicator or profane person like Esau, who for one morsel of food sold his birthright.  For you know that afterward, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought it diligently with tears.

Hebrew 12:14-17

Today’s section of scripture is heavy! There’s probably a hundred good Bible studies on these few verses, but the most obvious one is the lesson of Esau. If you remember, Esau sold his birthright to his brother Jacob for a measly bowl of soup. “How stupid,” you might say. Yet we do the same thing everyday. Just like Esau, we put the immediate wants and needs of our flesh ahead of our heavenly birthright.

Paul* compares Esau’s lack of respect for his birthright to profaneness and fornication and points out that Esau stepped over the line. He somehow crossed a point of no coming back. That’s scary, especially in the context of the other verses. It certainly makes me think twice before giving into the flesh and selling my eternal birthright for a momentary pleasure that is more fleeting than this world. I suspect many people who thought they had a ticket to the resurrection will be seeking one diligently with tears, but it will be too late.

So, let’s take Paul’s advice and pursue peace and holiness while we still have the breath God gave us.

*I know some people don’t think Paul wrote Hebrews, and if that’s you, that’s fine.

But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say?

Luke 6:46

Jesus sounds a little confused in today’s verse. I totally get it. I find it confusing also. Why would someone call him Lord and then not do what He says?

When I look at the chaos going on in America, the 3,288 babies murdered in abortion mills every day, and the public schools filled with the children of Christians being taught that there is no God through evolution, I have to scratch my head. It’s obvious that the majority of people calling Jesus Lord, Lord on Sunday are completely disengaged from acting on his behalf Monday through Saturday. After four decades of Americans who claim to be Christians, it’s only getting worse. Now the schools teach grade school children about their gender options, gay sex, and the peaceful religion of Islam.

Talk about confused, wait til these poor kids grow up to find out just how incompatible Islam is with their homosexuality and transgender lifestyles.

So here’s why I’m confused. Why do these people who tolerate this non-sense waste their time going to church? They’re either not being taught the Bible in their churches, or they let the teaching go in one ear and out the other. Either way, it seems their Sundays would be better spent at the lake or on the couch.

The bottom line is, don’t think you’ll get a free pass on Judgment Day for going to church if you aren’t doing the things he said to do.

And don’t tell me I’m teaching salvation by works. I know that’s not how we get it. Salvation is by grace through faith, but if it’s a true conversion, we should see some fruit in keeping with repentance. Unfortunately, if the American Church at large was producing fruit in keeping with repentance, abortion would not have stayed on the books for 40 years, and we would not have tolerated our children being indoctrinated by this wicked, atheistic, Babylonian education system.
