Today’s bible study is an extension of last week’s study. If you missed last week’s Bible study, I re-posted the recording of John Jacob Schmidt’s speech at the recent God and Country rally. John Jacob spoke on the difference between the 300 Spartans who were annihilated by the Persians and the Gideon’s 300 men who were also vastly outnumbered yet achieved victory.
Another battle scene in the Bible recounts the army of Joshua which had experienced success after success with the help of God. In Joshua 6 we read about the way God miraculously delivered Jericho into the hands of the Israelites. God’s only request is that in that specific battle, they dedicate all of the silver and gold objects to the treasury of the LORD and everything else was to be devoted to be destroyed. That seems like a fair request, right? After all, without his help, they would have never conquered Jericho at all.
Well, as you probably guessed, Achan thought it would be okay to keep a few items that were to be destroyed for himself. No one would ever know. Who could it hurt? It was stuff that was going to be destroyed anyway.
In Joshua 7, the Israelites go up against a relatively small force in Ai. The spies determine that most of the army can take a break and they will just send a portion of their troops to take out the city. Despite the inferior forces of Ai, the Israelites are routed and Joshua is stunned. Joshua cries out to God who replies in Joshua 7:10-12
“Stand up! What are you doing down on your face? Israel has sinned; they have violated my covenant, which I commanded them to keep. They have taken some of the devoted things; they have stolen, they have lied, they have put them with their own possessions. That is why the Israelites cannot stand against their enemies; they turn their backs and run because they have been made liable to destruction. I will not be with you anymore unless you destroy whatever among you is devoted to destruction.”
Needless to say, this story doesn’t turn out well for Achan. Through his demise, the entire Israelite camp learned an important lesson about taking God seriously. The sin was rooted out and Israel defeated Ai.
As you well know, we are in a serious battle. We are constantly involved in a spiritual battle every day against the Devil who is trying to steal our joy, destroy our families and ultimately take our lives. We are also in a battle of ideas in our country. Everyday, our country is loosing ground in the arena of freedom and morality. It is imperative that we take God seriously and obey him if we expect him to be in this fight with us. It might be a little sin that you think won’t hurt anyone and no one will ever know, but it can have a detrimental effect on our entire camp. This week, pray and ask God to help you overcome those sins that could stand in the way of victory.
