We’re all preppers here, right? We know how silly it is when we try to wake folks up to the need to prepare now and we’re told by friends and family that they’ll do it later. “I’ll get my money out of the bank when the crisis starts.” “I’ll gas up the car when the forecast says the hurricane is coming here.” “I’ll stock up the pantry if it looks like we’re going to get more than three inches of snow.” We’ve all heard these asinine procrastination statements regarding preparedness.

But how often do we hear similar declarations of delay concerning spiritual preparation? This is a far more serious matter than getting ready for a snow storm or hurricane. One of the curious things about salvation is that is is completely free yet it costs us everything. It’s free to me, because Jesus paid it all and it was a debt I had no ability to pay. Yet it costs us our way of life as we surrender the desires of our flesh to live a life of repentance. This life of repentance is the catch and what causes so many people to bank on a death-bed confession. Like the procrastinator who thinks he’ll gas up and hit the grocery at the last minute, many people think they’ll get a few more good years of getting drunk with their buddies or reading girly magazines before they commit. Others think they’ll time it just right, live a life of sin and debauchery, then, with their last breath ask for forgiveness.

That mentality is the dictionary definition of playing with fire. No man is promised tomorrow and you might never see it coming. A Mack truck blowing through your intersection or a bullet from behind can cause your next breath to be your last at any time. 2 Corinthians 6 says “today is the day of salvation.” Strike while the iron is hot, get your life right with Jesus while he is still giving you breath to ask for forgiveness and strength to live the life he requires of you.
