Go with a mutual insurance company. Yes, the employees do get salaries, but the profits go back to the policyholders. Northwestern and Liberty are well-known, reputable mutual insurers.
Remember, the point of insurance is to diversify the financial aspects of personal risk. Self-insuring is great, but having a calamity hit before you have accumulated the necessary reserves would be a bad outcome.
Great advice. Thanks!
I envy the fact that they’ve been able to break away from the system and have achieved self sufficiency and are living on their own terms. But I’m not sure I agree with their stance on insurance. Isn’t insurance just another prep against the possibility of something bad? Sure, you might be relatively young and healthy, but that doesn’t mean you won’t be hit head-on by a drunk driver today or tomorrow or a week from now, and then where would your family be? What am I missing?
Jimmy,
Insurance can be part of a good preparedness plan, but a large portion of your premiums will end up enriching the insurance companies. Some folks who are able, decide to self-insure. That just means putting money aside to deal with calamity themselves. It’s a big risk, and folks should understand how quickly costs can add up if they decide to self-insure. I don’t think any states allow you to drive without at least a liability policy.
I do get that insurance is big business and a lot of people have made a lot of money off the premiums paid. With that said, if you can afford to self-insure, you can truly consider yourself blessed. As you say though, it’s extremely important that people who choose to self-insure understand how quickly costs can add up…and I believe you are right that there aren’t any states that allow you to drive without at least a liability policy, but if I can share a quick story – I was hit head-on by a drunk driver when I was 30. It crushed me from the waste down. I am very fortunate to be able to walk and by the grace of God, most days I don’t even have a limp. The problem that I discovered with liability only policies is that they typically carry a maximum $10,000 per person payout. The helicopter flight cost $12,000 and the hospital and physical therapy bills for the next year piled up to approximately $1,000,000. If I did not have my own insurance policy to kick in when his policy maxed out, I would have had to sue the other guy for the cost which my insurance company did on my behalf, but that was basically like trying to bleed a turnip dry…Again, I agree that if you can do it, self-insurance is great, but make sure you have a grasp of what the bills could be!
Jimmy, You’re ordeal is a great example of the need for good insurance and what people should consider if they decide to self-insure. Thanks for sharing.
