Duct Tape Survival

Maybe the better question would be “What can’t you do with duct tape?”. Its strength, value  and durability has made it the fix all product of choice for many lazy husbands. No bug out bag or home preparedness kit is complete without at least one roll of duct tape. The survival uses for duct tape are as numerous as the stars, but today we will look at just a few.

Secure Windows and Doors

In the event of a chemical spill or dirty bomb attack in your area, you should have enough duct tape and thick plastic sheeting to seal off all of your windows and doors. If you are short on materials, consider just sealing off one section of the house and staying there. Bugging out may not be an option. Duct tape can also be used to put on windows before a hurricane to keep the glass from shattering  if it is hit by flying debris.

Wrist and Leg Restraints

Being a prepper can make you a target when the neighbors run out of food. Being able to restrain people who are trying to hurt you may be a better option than the alternative.

Duct tape should be in every bug out bag. If you get a hole in your bug out bag, your tent or your shoe, duct tape will extend the usefulness of your damaged equipment by keeping it functional.

Third world military are fond of duct tape for duplexing AK 47 magazines together. You can also use it to attach your knife to your bug out bag shoulder strap for quick access or secure your sleeping bag to the bottom of the bag.

Medical

While not a first choice for medical, it beats the heck out of bleeding out. Duct tape can be used to secure a patch of clean cloth to a large wound or a small piece can hold a small bit of tissue to act as a make shift band-aid. It can also be used to make a splint for a broken arm or leg.

Improvised Equipment

Duct tape can be used to hold trash bags together for a shelter. It can be used to tape a knife to the end of a stick to give you a spear for fishing, hunting or self defense. You can attach a light to your hat for working at night or even make a cup.

Duct tape now comes in several colors and even woodland or digital camo patterns. It can be used for improvised weapon accessories or to make objects less noticeable in the woods.

Duct tape always has a large cardboard roll in the center which wastes a lot of space in your bug out bag. An easy remedy for this is to cut the cardboard out and smash the roll together making it more compact.

Make sure you have duct tape on hand before it hits the fan!

Obama Tries to Incite Riots

The media and the administration are evidently unhappy with the lack of racial violence following the Zimmerman trial. The President of the United States went on television to say that he has been a victim of racism his whole life. He said he could have been Trayvon. It could have been him that was trespassing in a private neighborhood, that attacked the security guard and tried to bludgeon him to death because he thought white people where ‘creepy crackers’. With this admission to being a racist bigot by our own president, we also heard his effort to incite the riots.

The low level of violence that has occurred from the verdict has been a disappointment to the establishment. Both big government democrats and the Fox News brand of neo-con republicans  aspire to the advancement of the surveillance police state. The ‘divide and conquer’ technique used by the administration and all the mainstream media outlets to trigger mass rioting throughout the country failed. Obama is now resorting to  telling the American public that the court system doesn’t work. He said the outcome would have been different had Trayvon been white. He is right, Zimmerman would have never lost his freedom, been subjected to 2 years of hell and been targeted as a racist murderer if Trayvon would have been white.

So if the media is trying to incite riots, what is the objective of this divide and conquer strategy? To answer that, let us look at the Rodney King Riots. The big government police state was still in its infancy at that point in 1992. They had no idea what a gem of opportunity they had been given.

National Guard were activated on April 30, 1992; One day after the LA riots began.

They did activate the state national guard and instituted martial law. They also began positioning US Marines in Compton. Just before they could have suspended  posse comitatus, they riots died down.

The US Marines were ready for the suspension of posse comitatus. They arrived in Compton, CA on May 2,1992; 3 days after the riots began.

Next time, they will be ready. Never again will they allow the opportunity to condition you into being a more compliant slave slip through their evil little fingers.

The people of Boston poured into the streets to cheer for the police state that entered their dwellings without warrants and treated them like filthy criminals. The police frisked old men and manhandled old women that looked nothing like the single 19 year old kid they were searching for. But the point was proven. The people of that area are well conditioned. Not a peep was heard when their rights were trampled.

Sunday Prepper Bible Study- John 16:33

“In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

If your translation of the Bible says “In this world, you might have trouble” , throw it away. Jesus told us in this verse that we WILL have trouble. There is absolutely no way around it. Since the fall of man in the garden, this world has been broken. This is not Heaven and it is not supposed to be. Don’t expect good things all the time.

Sooner or later, hard times will come upon you. Whether it is a bad report from the doctor, a lay off from your long time employer or court papers that show up on your door step for something that wasn’t your fault, rainy days happen to us all. Perhaps it will be worse than that. Perhaps the collapse of the fiat monetary system is upon us. Jesus told us to “Take heart, I have overcome the world.” What does that mean? Does that mean the disease will go away, I’ll get a better job the next day or that the court case will be dropped? Does it mean a stronger America will rise from the ashes of this failed empire? Probably not. It means he overcame this world. He has made a way for us to be with him in Heaven. More than that, he will be with us to walk through the fire while we are here.

Everyday, as Christians, we should focus on our eternity in Heaven rather than this world which is quickly fading away like a morning fog. If we do that, we will be better prepared to get through the tough times when they come. And they will most certainly come.

Today’s guest is Glen Tate. Glen is the author of the wildly popular 299 Days book series. Glen has just released book six in the series, The 17th Irregulars. Glen gives us a sneak peak into the book.

Glen Tate and I  discuss the recent announcement by the Obama administration to roll back the employer mandate portion of Obama care until 2015. The original deadline was 2014. This may be a sign that things are much worse in Washington than what is commonly thought.

We also talk about the recent language by the Federal Reserve to begin tapering Quantitative Easing. The move to reduce the amount of free money sloshing around is tantamount to taking away the punch bowl at a party. The news sent the party goers scrambling and interest rates spiked from 1.6% on the 10 year Treasury Note in May to a recent high of 2.71%. The increase represents a 69% increase in the benchmark rate. This is possibly another sign that things are about to come off the tracks.

In the interview, Glen Tate gives us his view on the precious metals market. The gold to oil price ratio is 11 to 1 when compared with the brent crude price per barrel. I hope that I have prepared well enough and never have to use this information, but it is a good idea to know a few wild edible plants, just in case.

Cat Tails

One easily recognizably plant that can be eaten is cat tails. Cat tails are found in several areas of the US and often grow near ponds. The leaves can be eaten boiled or raw as well as the top of the plant. The core of the flower may be a bit hard to digest, so just eat the outer portion.

Clover

Another common and easy to identify edible plant is clover. They can also be eaten raw or boiled.

Dandelion

You can also eat every part of the dandelion. The flowers and leaves can be eaten cooked or raw.

Kelp

If you are near a beach, kelp often washes up. It may also be eaten raw or boiled.

An Easy Test for Edibles

There are several species of wild plants that are edible. We could list many more, but  if you are like me, you may not remember them if you are not familiar with plants to begin with. There is a way to test plants that you may think are edible if  you are in danger of starvation. You can rub a bit of the plant under your arm to see if you have any reaction. Wait 15 minutes. If it passed that test, you can rub it under your tongue and wait another 15 minutes. Once the plant passes that test, eat a very small amount of it and wait 24 hours. If you still don’t have a bad reaction, it may be safe to eat in an emergency situation.

There are a few things you can avoid to increase your chances of the plant being safe. Avoid anything with a milky sap. Also try to steer clear of plants with tree leaf growth patterns and thorns or spines. Any grain head with pink, purple or black spurs should also be avoided if you are not familiar with the plant.

Your local library probably has a good book on edible wild plants, so why not familiarize yourself with the things that are growing in your area that are edible.

Regardless of where you stand on immigration, all patriots should oppose the immigration bill as it now stands. The bill has passed the Senate and is now heading to the House for approval. Just as we had the indefinite detention clause buried in the 2012 NDAA, the immigration bill also has sinister components hidden deep within. The immigration bill contains a mandatory e-verify clause.

The Patriot act, as we all remember, was going to be just a little encroachment upon our freedom that would delivers us from the hand of foreign invaders that were intent on killing every American. 12 years later, we watch powerlessly as our wives and daughters are groped by the hands of depraved TSA agents. We bow our heads in defeat as we are treated as criminals, being frisked, scanned and having our personal effects riffled through at every airport. Now, the TSA is setting up shop monitoring Americas highways. This is all to save us from an enemy that doesn’t exist. Your chances of being killed by terrorism is 1 in 20,000,000.

We also suffer horrific encroachments upon our privacy. As Edward Snowden warned us, the NSA tracks your every phone call, e-mail, Google search and Facebook post. This, of course, is also for our own good. We are told what size soda we can drink and how many bullets we can have in our guns. All in the name of keeping us safe.

Mandatory E-Verify now rides in on a white horse to free us from those who would steal our jobs. The DHS program promises to maintain a data base that will ensure everyone working in America has been confirmed by the Federal Government. I feel better already. Have you ever heard the horror story of anyone who was wrongly placed on a no fly list? I have. Now, imagine yourself on a ‘no work’ list. Of course these things do happen, by mistake of course. It often seems that these things happen disproportionately to those who are dissidents or hold views that oppose those of the administration.

E-verify is another tool in the hand of a growing police state that has proven it will use IRS audits to target those opposed to the administration, DOJ wire tapping to suppress the free press, and collect as much data as possible on all of its citizens. It gives more power to an out of control Federal Government who has proved they are incapable of defending our rights and hold nothing but contempt for the Constitution.

E-verify will mandate a tamper resistant Social Security card which will require biometrics data to be collected on all US citizens. It will give the Federal Government the ability to grant or deny your humble plea to gain employment. It will add compliance costs to the expenses of employers, which will destroy the very jobs it claims to protect.

E-verify will be another method for your government to control you and keep a watchful eye upon your every move. Once you are loaded into the cattle car, it is too late to speak out. Please let your Representative know that you do not support the immigration bill because of the mandatory e-verify clause.

“A prudent man sees danger and takes refuge, but the simple keep going and suffer for it.”

Since the beginning of hurricane season, we have been focusing on some of the basics of prepping on Prepper Recon. I thought this would also be a good opportunity to get back to some of the basic Bible verses that speak about preparedness. Today’s verse is one of my favorite prepper verses. Last week, we said that prepping was an act of faith, not a lack thereof. It shows that you believe God’s Word and follow the instructions He has given. Today’s verse also serves to confirm that the Bible considers it prudent to take refuge from coming danger. The other side of today’s verse tells us the simple pay no attention to the possibility of coming calamity. It goes on to say they will pay a price for their foolishness.

Our government has been making bad choice after bad choice when it comes to our monetary system. We continue to devalue the dollar by excessive money printing. The government has imposed itself into the arena of healthcare which  is an economic time bomb. Just last week, we saw the administration make some acknowledgement of the risk that the new heath care law places on employment when they rolled back the date of the employer mandate portion of the law to 2015.

The most important step you can take to hedge yourself against the possibility of hard times ahead is to begin to prepare a refuge. You can begin to build your refuge by cutting spending and developing a more aggressive debt reduction and saving plan. You can build an emergency fund of 6 months total expenses. You can also build up a 6 month store of long term storable food. Even if things do get better, all of these actions will put you in a better position to prosper in good times as well as giving you refuge for hard times.

In case you missed it because the mainstream media was only covering Paula Dean and George Zimmerman last week, The Obama Care mandate for employers of more than 50 full time workers has been postponed until after the 2014 congressional elections. It sound like someone has been reading PrepperRecon! We warned in the October 2012 post, Obama Care and The Coming Unemployment Crisis, written prior to the 2012 presidential elections that Obama Care was an economic time bomb. Read the entire old post to get the full story on how Obama Care will cripple the economy.

Well, nothing has changed. Obama Care is still the same ticking time bomb even though the date has been pushed back to 2015. Use your time wisely. Save like never before, pay down debt and stock up on essential supplies. The economic nightmare is still unfolding.

While the employer mandate was rolled back, the individual mandate to purchase health care insurance still stands at 2014. By the barrel of a gun, you will be forced to purchase health insurance. The mandate will be enforced by the IRS, whose agents are now training with Assault rifles. Why are accountants being trained with military weapons? Is it to enforce Obama Care? If you think I am being mellow dramatic, try not purchasing the insurance. You will be assessed a fine. Try not paying that fine or responding to letter from the agency. Then, tell me how long it is until an IRS agent shows up at your door, itching to try out his new toy.

It appears that the fine may be cheaper than purchasing the insurance, at least in the initial stages. Many people will chose the fine over the insurance or extermination. Insurance agencies will not be allowed to turn down people with pre existing conditions. People will simply pay the fines until they get sick. At that time they will purchase insurance. This will quickly bankrupt the insurance system and the government will be able to step in unopposed to take over the industry. We will then have the single payer system that Obama Care was designed to create. While we were playing checkers, Obama was playing chess. Checkmate, welcome to the Socialist States of America.

How do you prep for a riot? Well, thanks  to the diversion and division tactics employed by the main stream media, this is something many people are asking themselves right now. If you are on the right or the left or even consider yourself a centrist, your favorite mainstream news outlet has ignored a complete revolution in Egypt, continued riots in Turkey and the fact that the government is watching your every move. Instead, we have gotten minute by minute coverage of the Zimmerman trial. It is possible that the primary reason for the coverage is to divert your attention away from the real troubles of the world. It is also possible that the purpose of the continuous coverage is to incite racial division among us so that we are not paying attention to the true enemies. If we are squabbling among ourselves, we need the government to step in and mediate. This gives them the opportunity to step in as the knight in shining armor as they steal away our rights and convince us it is for our own good. After all, can we be trusted with freedom?

Practical Steps

That is the end of the rant, now for some practical steps. If the media is successful at triggering riots to give them something to cover, most of the preparations will be similar to preparing for a hurricane or severe snow storm. In the event of an outbreak of riots, the best place to be is in your house. You should always have enough food and water that you do not have to leave your home for several days. There is a slim possibility of power outages due to fires that may take out near by transformers or power reduction stations. Because of that, make sure you have some long term storage food that doesn’t require refrigeration.

Use Your Head

Your number one tool to survive a riot outbreak is common  sense. Yes, I realize it is not that common. Using your noodle will entail maintaining a high level of situational awareness. As with anytime there is a lot of electricity in the air over a subject, make note of when the verdict is set to come out on the Zimmerman trial. The day the verdict is expected, try to not schedule any extra circular activities. Plan to come straight home after work  and stay there until you know the coast is clear. Once the verdict is issued, keep a close eye on news aggregate sites like The Liberty Mill and Drudge Report. If something happens, those sites will show it in the headlines before anyone else. If there are incidents popping up in other cities, this increases the chances something will happen in your city.

Monitor Police Radio on Your Phone

A great tool for situation awareness is the police scanner for your home computer. Broadcastify.com will allow you to select your region to listen in. It will allow you to listen to the police radios in your area. If there is wide spread rioting, they will be discussing it there. You should also download a list of the 10 codes used in your area as well. 10 codes are cryptic, and you will need a list to decipher what incidents are taking place. Yes, there is an app for that! The Google play store has an app called Scanner Radio that uses Broadcastify.com for your smart phone. iFolks, you are on your own. I am sure you will find a similar app. This may allow you to know if there is trouble between you and home if you are at work when it hits the fan.

Have a Means of Defending Yourself and Your Property

Security is a big issue in a riot. If you are just now waking up to the need for a weapon and have no idea what to get,  a pump action shotgun is going to be the easiest thing to find and they are generally fairly affordable. Ammunition is also quite easy to find. The Mossberg 500 can be purchased for around $300. Shotguns tend to be available even in extremely liberal areas where handguns are more restricted. If you do elect to purchase a handgun, keep in mind that you may have a wait period, depending on where you live. It is possible that the verdict will be given before the wait period will allow you to access your hand gun.

Bugging Out

Bugging out only makes sense when you absolutely have to. If you are in the direct path of the riot or there is a fire threatening your neighborhood, you have to go. Otherwise, you risk getting stuck on the road in an even more volatile situation than the one you left. Of course there is always that possibility. To be ready to go, you should get together a bug out bag that has a few essential items. It should have cash, a change of clothes, snacks, water, and a first aid kit. You should also have all of your essential documents on a flash drive. Make sure you fill up your tank the day before the verdict is expected. Take Care of Each Other

Pray that cooler heads will prevail and all of your riot preps are just a good investment in preparedness. We have seen a lot of tension all around the world lately, and these things do have the potential to get out of control. Also communicate with your family to be hyper-aware of their surroundings over the coming days and keep communication lines open.
